<p>After World War II, general Chiang Kai-shek founded the Republic of China on Taiwan, where he establishes a cult of personality. But on 28 February 1947 he faced an uprising that he responded to with violent repression. The subject was taboo until the ‘90s. Since then, each year on February 28, people sprinkle his statues with red paint.</p>

<p>Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog sticht generaal Chiang Kai-shek de Republiek China in Taiwan, waar hij een persoonlijkheidscultus vestigt. Op 28 februari 1947 komt hij voor een volksopstand te staan die hij gewelddadige neerslaat. Het onderwerp is tot de jaren 90 taboe. Sindsdien bekladden de mensen ieder jaar op 28 februari zijn beelden met rode verf.</p>
